I think the funny thing is that everyone is complaining to Google that a third party app doesn't work. Isn't it the author of Infinite SMS that is responsible for whether its program works?

The users paid InnerFence for the app, they should tell InnerFence that it's their responsibility to make sure the application works. The users have no direct business relationship with Google here.

i wholly agree with Google's decision, although i am dismayed that InnerFence have essentially ruined it for the rest of us.

i don't agree with Michael's comment about SMS replacing voice calls as a method of communicating. text communication has no intonation, and is only as fast as you can type (either on a crappy touchscreen, or a number keypad). when you desperately have something to say, it's frustrating to say it at the speed of text.

yet another example of the iPhone ruining something.

People need to learn that bandwidth costs money, they expect that "Oh it's Google, they don't need to worry about losing money." I really hate people who complain when a FREE service is stopped.

Andrew,

As you say there's no such thing as a free lunch. (All the lunches I've never paid for not withstanding.)

Personally I understand Google's decision perfectly. I for one doubt that "Infinite SMS" contacted Google beforehand to arrange to use their service or, if they did, they didn't explain to them what the service was.

Since it was a Labs project, something not finalised/released yet, and since Google were not ready to take that stream of traffic, I can;t blame them for shutting it down.

Also, granted SMS are overcharged, but if you can send SMS's for no fee, then nobody would pay for them at all, and if it cost nothing, fewer calls would be made too, so the Mobile Phone companies would pay the price.

The final thing? People are COMPLAINING about someone taking a free service that shouldn't have been theirs away from them? Just doesn't sit right with me.
